SUMMARY:Andrew Barron - Why the honey bee is smarter than ChatGPT
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nHow smart is the honey bee really? This lecture considers how we might assess and compare intelligence in radically different forms of natural and artificial intelligence.  I argue that in some crucial aspects the honey bee is significantly smarter than ChatGPT and the best that contemporary AI has to offer. I discuss what lessons AI and robotics developers might have to learn from consideration of the humble bee. \n  \nSpeaker Bio \nAndrew Barron is Director of The Macquarie University Minds and Intelligences Research Centre. Andrew completed his PhD in Zoology at The University of Cambridge in 1999. His lab at Macquarie University studies honey bee neurobiology\, specialising on understanding the incredible intelligence of bees and how sophisticated social behaviour is possible with such a tiny brain. His research is currently supported by awards from The Ian and Shirley Norman Foundation\, The Australian Research Council\, Horticulture Innovation and The Templeton World Charity Foundation. SUMMARY:Bianca Bonato - Beyond the Brain: Cognition\, Communication\, and Social Behaviour in Plants
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nThis talk explores cognitive processes beyond the boundaries of the nervous system\, drawing on the theoretical framework of comparative psychology and the emerging field of plant cognition. It revisits the pioneering work of Charles Darwin\, whose studies first described plants as dynamic organisms capable of flexible and adaptive behaviour\, insights that contemporary interdisciplinary research is now re-evaluating in light of new empirical evidence. Within this perspective\, research conducted at the MindThePlant laboratory at the University of Padova investigates plant behaviour through an integration of experimental psychology and biological sciences. By combining three-dimensional kinematic analysis with techniques such as mass spectrometry\, this work examines the relationship between movement and the chemical signalling processes that underlie plant behaviour. Focusing on climbing plants\, the research investigates reaching and grasping movements as structured\, adaptive\, and environmentally modulated behaviours. Building on these findings\, the work extends to the social dimension of plant behaviour\, the central focus of Dr. Bonato’s research\, exploring how the presence of other organisms shapes movement patterns and coordination dynamics. These studies reveal forms of social modulation functionally comparable to processes observed in humans and other animals. The investigation is further enriched by the analysis of communication mediated by volatile organic compounds\, linking motor behaviour with chemical exchange mechanisms. Overall\, this research contributes to a broader and more inclusive understanding of cognition\, challenging the assumption that cognitive processes necessarily require a brain and redefining the boundaries of where and how cognition can emerge in living systems. \nSpeaker Bio \nBianca Bonato is an Assistant Professor in the Department of General Psychology at the University of Padova. She received her PhD in Psychological Science in 2024 developing interdisciplinary research at the intersection of comparative cognition\, plant behaviour\, and biological sciences. \nHer work focuses on social cognition\, investigating how motor and communicative processes can be studied across taxa\, by using climbing plants as an experimental model. She employs advanced methodologies including 3D kinematic analysis and mass spectrometry\, a novel experimental window to the study of cognition. \nBianca has received numerous national and international recognitions\, including an award from the Scientific Research Intergroup of the Italian Parliament\, in recognition of the scientific commitment of women in advancing knowledge and contributing to societal progress. \nAlongside her research\, she teaches Psychobiology of Environmental Sustainability and she is highly active in science communication\, with invited talks at major international conferences worldwide and contributions to public engagement through radio\, television\, and theatre. \nIf you plan to attend this event in person\, please register here. SUMMARY:Sofia Forss - Shaping and Shifting the Cognitive Phenotype: Ontogeny\, Urbanization\, and the Evolutionary Validity of Animal Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nIn any given species\, some individuals consistently appear more “intelligent” than their peers\, yet explaining the origin of this variation and its direct link to biological fitness remains a fundamental challenge in evolutionary biology. Because cognitive skills are heavily shaped by experiences during development\, understanding the impact of the early environment on adult phenotypes is critical—especially in mammals\, where early ontogeny represents a disproportionately impactful life stage. However\, our understanding of animal intelligence is historically biased toward either artificial laboratory settings or large-brained species\, decoupling cognitive studies from natural selection pressures. To bring ecological validity to the study of animal intelligence\, this talk integrates two distinct yet complementary paradigms in mammalian cognition: a longitudinal field study of small mammals and the shifting dynamics of the urban niche. First\, using a longitudinal\, developmental approach on wild meerkats\, I explore how socio-ecological drivers and key developmental life history transitions shape cognitive abilities. Second\, expanding this developmental and ecological framework to human-modified landscapes\, I examine the cognitive realities of the urban niche through the lens of the Urban Vervet Project. While urbanization is widely assumed to act as a selective or developmental driver for enhanced problem-solving\, I reconsider this consensus by evaluating the roles of anthropogenic habituation and cognitive exaptation. Pre-existing behavioural flexibility may simply allow certain species to exploit urban environments as “easy” niches\, rather than demanding novel cognitive adaptations. \nSpeaker Bio \nSofia Forss is an evolutionary biologist dedicated to understanding animal minds. Her research explores the evolutionary drivers of individual intelligence\, investigating how socio-ecological pressures\, intrinsic motivation\, and development interact to shape cognitive variation and biological fitness. Currently\, Sofia is a Group Leader at the University of Zurich’s Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Sciences. There\, she directs two major long-term field initiatives in South Africa: the Mongoose Cognition Project and the Urban Vervet Project\, where Sofia and her team critically evaluate how wild populations cognitively navigate both natural ecosystems and rapidly changing anthropogenic landscapes.
